Evaluation

A Merchant's Promise is a physics-based medieval trading game actively in Early Access, originally launched on March 21, 2025. The game is developed by a solo developer who has maintained a consistent and transparent update cadence throughout Early Access. Since the previous evaluation, Patch 037 — the major update that had been in development for several months — shipped on August 18, 2026 (today). It is a substantial release, adding a new UI, a new map, new item handling mechanics, horses, new ways to earn money, a damage shader, performance improvements, a stamina and rest system, inns, and tents. The update was preceded by an extensive public beta period running from early July through late July 2026, during which the developer pushed beta patches every one to two days and posted detailed progress notes. Looking ahead, the developer explicitly outlined the next phases of development in the Patch 037 release notes: a Shopkeeper Update allowing players to rent and decorate shops in villages, a Survival Update revisiting temperature, weather, hunger, thirst, and health systems, a Bandits and Hazards update adding risk to travel, and a Great Balance pass to tune the game's economy and pacing. The developer also noted that future updates will return to a more focused, incremental cadence now that the large structural rewrites behind Patch 037 are complete. The developer remains highly communicative, active in Discord daily, and has demonstrated consistent follow-through on announced features throughout Early Access. There are no signs of development slowdown or studio distress.

A Merchant's Promise will not micro-manage you:

A part of the fun is in the discovery of something new. Whether an area, shop, event, or even something as small as a road sign that helps you find your way!

Priorities of Continued EA Development:

  • The Game World - I am working hard to bring more elements of "life" and "depth" into the game as current features are also tested by those of you that play the Beta Version.

  • Consistent & Reliable gameplay - Physics games are quirky and a lot of adjustments are always being made.

  • Gets the bugs out - I handle these through the Discord Reporting (Link on Store Page or In Game) as soon as possible with a ticket system so you can stay up-to-date on your issue's progress.

Thank you for taking the time to visit and I look forward to providing you with a great product and fun challenge!
