Ancient Wars: Sparta Definitive Edition is a solo-developed Early Access RTS that has been actively built out since its January 2022 launch. The developer has shipped a steady stream of major updates throughout the Early Access period, adding campaigns (Romans in February 2024, Egyptian in January 2025, Spartan/Thermopylae in June 2026), new game systems, civilizations, multiplayer improvements, and extensive fixes. The path to the full 1.0 release is explicitly mapped out. In October 2025, the developer announced that the full release is planned for December 8, 2026 — the 20th anniversary of the original game — and described a plan of three major updates leading to launch. The December 2025 update (v0.88) was described as "the first of three major updates leading to the final version of the game." The June 23, 2026 Thermopylae Update — which added a full new 9-mission campaign and a sweeping set of new systems — is the second of those three. One final major update is still to come on the full release day. The most recent developer communication was the Thermopylae Update on June 23, 2026, just over two months ago. Development is clearly ongoing and on schedule toward the announced December 2026 1.0 launch.
