Evaluation
B-17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty 8th Redux entered Early Access on January 25, 2024, and MicroProse has been actively developing it at a consistent pace ever since. The update history shows a steady stream of improvements spanning gameplay AI, aircraft models, UI, controls, and rendering.
The most significant recent milestone is Update 1.0.21 "Old Faithful," released today (September 1, 2026), which delivers the sweeping terrain and sky rendering overhaul that had been previewed in Dev Blog #9 on May 27, 2026. This update brings a completely new terrain rendering architecture, a physically-based atmospheric sky model, improved target rendering, and a new historical mission (Oshersleben). The fact that such a major technical milestone shipped confirms the team is actively delivering on what they announce.
Despite this substantial progress, the game remains in Early Access with several explicitly stated goals still outstanding. The store page continues to list planned improvements including updated B-17 and fighter exterior models, new missions, improved tutorials, a new game manual, and larger aircraft formations. Dev Blog #9 also mentioned experimental community content tooling that is still in early stages. None of these have been confirmed as shipped. MicroProse has shown no signs of slowing down or winding up development, and has not made any statement about the game reaching a 1.0 or final release milestone.
Evidence
Update 1.0.21 'Old Faithful' ships the major terrain and sky rendering overhaul, adds a new historical mission (Oshersleben), and improves the texture damage system. MicroProse describes it as a 'labour of love' and signs off with an ongoing rallying call to players.
Dev Blog #9 previews the forthcoming environment overhaul (terrain, sky, volumetric clouds) and experimental community content tooling. The volumetric clouds are described as still in progress, and the community tooling is described as 'early days.'

About this game
The missions undertaken by the crews of B-17 bombers during World War II are the stuff of legend. What was it like to fly through relentless anti-aircraft fire over Nazi-occupied Europe? What was it like to have a thin layer of steel between life and death at 15,000 feet? How did it feel to furiously fend off enemy fighters zipping around your plane and then to precisely deliver your payload over enemy targets?
Find out for yourself as you lead a 10-man crew to victory... or defeat... against squadrons of Nazi warplanes in the legendary B-17 Flying Fortress!
