Evaluation

Back is a full-motion video (FMV) horror game released on July 30, 2024 by the three-person indie studio MYSTERY CROWN. The game itself shipped as a complete standalone experience, but it is the first entry in an ongoing series that the developer has continued to actively build upon. Since Back's release, MYSTERY CROWN has maintained a prolific output: Back 2 (Back: Fade) launched in late April/early May 2025, and Back 3: Spooky followed on September 27, 2025. The developer has explicitly stated that Back 4 is planned — its script is already written — and is currently in the fundraising stage. In their September 2025 announcement, they even outlined a long-term vision extending to a potential Back 7, where two separate protagonist storylines would converge. On April 18, 2026, the studio posted a detailed release lineup for the rest of 2026, listing six additional projects including horror FMVs and demo versions of new game formats. The developer has been communicating regularly and transparently throughout, including candid posts about financial pressures and studio survival strategies. The studio's most recent communication was April 18, 2026 — roughly two months before today — maintaining their consistent pattern of regular updates. MYSTERY CROWN has made clear they intend to keep producing content in this series and beyond for as long as they can sustain the studio.
