Evaluation
Back in 1995 launched on April 28, 2016 as a short (~2-3 hour) passion project by solo indie developer Takaaki Ichijo. The game received one major free content update — the Survival Update (November 7, 2017) — which added English voice acting, a new Hard Mode, a new location ("The Factory"), new enemies and puzzles, and overall rebalancing. A follow-up patch (v2.5.0, February 22, 2018) addressed bugs introduced by the Survival Update and added quality-of-life improvements. Console ports to Switch, PS4, Vita, and Xbox One were announced in October 2018 for Spring 2019, but no further PC content updates followed.
The most significant and recent developer communication came on December 23, 2022, when Ichijo published a Steam Deck setup guide. In that post, he explicitly stated that updating the game is no longer possible due to difficulty reconstructing the old development environment, and that he has "already moved away from developing PS1-style games and is working on a completely different theme." He also reflected on the game's legacy, framing it as a historical milestone for the PS1-style genre. This is a clear and definitive statement that development on Back in 1995 has concluded.
There are no unreleased DLC listings, no announced future content, and no ongoing update cadence. The game is complete as of the v2.5.0 patch in February 2018, with the developer having formally confirmed the end of support in December 2022.
Evidence
Developer explicitly states it is no longer possible to update the game due to an unrecoverable development environment, and confirms he has moved on to a completely different project, framing Back in 1995 as a completed legacy work.
The Survival Update shipped as a free update, adding a new location (The Factory), English voice acting, Hard Mode, new enemies and puzzles, and overall rebalancing.
