Evaluation

Backrooms Society is a solo-developed Early Access co-op horror game that launched on June 19, 2023 and has been actively developed since. The developer, Mikael Bihl, has maintained a consistent and strong update cadence, shipping 5 major content updates over roughly three years — approximately one every 3–9 months. The most recent major update, version 0.6.9 on May 29, 2026, introduced an entirely new procedurally generated level (Level 2.6 – Planned Expedition) built using a new generation system explicitly described as being "built for future level designs." The same update added a new movement system and stated it "will play an even larger role in future updates" — a direct developer signal that more content is in the pipeline. A follow-up seasonal patch (version 0.6.91) arrived just weeks later on June 18, 2026, adding Midsummer-themed content and further refinements. In April 2025, the developer openly communicated a personal injury had caused significant delays to version 0.6, but confirmed ongoing work. Version 0.6 shipped in August 2025 as promised, demonstrating the developer's track record of following through on commitments despite setbacks. The game continues to receive a steady flow of major content drops, feature patches, seasonal events, and bug fixes, with the most recent developer communication dated June 18, 2026. No 1.0 release date has been announced, and there is no indication that development is winding down.

About this game

Make your way through disturbing and eeire levels from the backrooms lore. Each level has unique objectives, optional objectives and resources. Bring whatever you get your hands on back to Traders Keep in The Hub or use your resources to craft new gear and equipment.

Procedural Generation
The Metro brings explorers to random unknown levels with unknown threats. The possibilities are nearly endless.
Use your "Journal" to document your findings in these levels. The M.E.G finds great value in accurate documentation.

Entities
There are multiple different entities you can encounter, they're all unique but have one thing in common, they do not make great friends. Beware and listen closely for any noise out of the ordinary. Save your stamina, because you're gonna need every last breath.

Defense
Some entities have weaknesses you can exploit to make an escape

Immersion
Large nonlinear levels with realistic graphics, eerie sounds from unknown sources and proximity voicechat with dynamic reverb will give you an immersive experience to write home about.

Co-op
Start your journey all alone or with a group of up to 8 players. Help eachother traverse the unknown and gather what you need to strive and survive in the backrooms.

The Hub
The Hub is your safe space, it's a seemingly infinite subterranean highway tunnel, wich has a direct connection to all levels in the form of evenly spaced doors along the walls of the tunnel. The Hub also has a permanently open door leading straight into Traders Keep, where you can trade and get contracts.

Loot, trade and craft
Scavenge each level for resources, valuables and gear. Some loot is level specific. You can use specific resources to craft certain gear to make your time in the backrooms a bit easier. You can make money by selling loot to vendors in Traders Keep and by completing contracts you get from a M.E.G operative, also in Traders Keep.

Sanity
Entities and other sources can cause your sanity to crumble, keep your sanity high by drinking almond water to withstand enitity attacks and other harmful elements.
