Evaluation

Backseat Drivers launched on October 9, 2025 with an 8-level campaign and two playable game modes, with a third (Race mode) noted as in progress at launch. Since then, GhostJam Games has shipped a steady stream of post-launch content: the Halloween Update on October 31, 2025 brought a new level and cosmetics; an Arcade Mode accessibility patch arrived on November 26, 2025; and the Holiday Heist Update on December 17, 2025 added another new level, a playable dog passenger, new character skins, cosmetics, and more — expanding the game by approximately 10%. Hotfixes followed on December 17 and December 21, 2025, with the most recent developer communication on December 21, 2025. The November 26, 2025 patch post stated that the studio was "still cooking more substantial updates with new content and other surprises," pointing clearly toward ongoing development beyond what had shipped at that point. The Holiday Heist update that followed fulfilled part of that promise, but the developer's framing suggested a broader ongoing pipeline rather than a single final delivery. As of today (September 24, 2026), the last developer communication was on December 21, 2025 — roughly nine months ago. The post-launch update pattern had been running at roughly a 3–7 week cadence between October and December 2025, so nine months of silence is well beyond that established window. However, the previous statement about ongoing content was never walked back or replaced by a statement declaring development complete. The Race mode teased at launch also remains unaccounted for — no update has shipped it, and no post has confirmed it was cancelled. Given the established pattern of active updates, the unresolved Race mode commitment from the launch post, and the absence of any developer statement declaring the game finished, the game remains in a state of active post-launch development based on the evidence available. The extended silence since December 2025 is notable, but no communication has indicated the studio has stopped work. The developer has not announced the game is complete.

About this game

You’re two hapless road-users in the world’s least roadworthy car, and you have a long, long drive ahead of you. The driver can’t see where they’re going. The passenger can see, but can’t drive, and desperately shouts directions from the back seat. All while the car falls to pieces and the world does everything it can to ruin your day.

Have a nice trip!

Gramma take the wheel! As the driver, you have to contend with the car working as hard as it can against you and listen to your passenger if you’ll have any chance of reaching your destination.

Ohhhh boy. Only the passenger can see where the car’s going, so you’re both at gramma’s mercy. Clear communication is key to keep the car from crashing!

Smash, shunt, and crash your way through one big detour of a journey taking you up mountains, down subway tunnels, onto insane highways and through secret government facilities.

Left! Left! No, RIGHT! Stop stop STOP!! The couple that jives together drives together. If the passenger gives good directions (and the driver can follow them) you’re guaranteed a smooth and blissful cruise. But when something goes wrong — which it will — it’s both of your faults.

The car may be an ancient piece of junk, but they don’t make ‘em like they used to. Every component is swappable with something else. No brake pedal? No problem. Just snap a cassette tape where the pedal used to be. Good as new!
