Bladestar launched on January 15, 2016 as a sci-fi action shooter. On January 2, 2018, Fair Weather Studios released version 1.1, which added Steam Achievements, leaderboards, and minor balance tweaks. In that same patch note, the developer explicitly stated: "This should now be the final version of the game." No further updates, patches, or content announcements for Bladestar have been made since that date. The developer's subsequent news posts were all focused on their separate title, Ancient Frontier, and its standalone expansion Steel Shadows — neither of which are content for Bladestar. The game shipped as a complete package with a defined feature set (50+ waves, 6 worlds, 8 bosses, multiple modes), and the developer has confirmed no further development is planned.

Pilots can switch between three different weapons and collects numerous power-ups battling pirates, rebels, and aliens. Players can customize their pilots with upgrades and collect experience to unlock additional ship customizations.
