Evaluation

Chronicles of Taldun: The Remainder launched on March 23, 2022 as a complete dark fantasy visual novel. After release, Square Weasel Studio continued refining the game, culminating in the Expanded Edition on November 13, 2024 — a substantial overhaul that added roughly 26,000 words, five new artworks, revised around twenty existing artworks, four new ambient tracks, and 467 unique sound effects. The developer explicitly described the Expanded Edition as bringing the game "as close to our vision as we're physically capable of manifesting," a clear statement that the game's content is now complete. Both DLC items on the store — the Fan Pack (released November 20, 2024) and the Soundtrack (released April 22, 2022) — have shipped. A March 2026 bug-fix patch addressed a crash and a true-ending accessibility issue, and a December 2025 patch added Steam Deck/controller support and a Simplified Chinese demo. These are maintenance updates, not new content for the base game. The studio's creative energy is now focused on a separate title in the same universe: Chronicles of Taldun: The Longing, a prequel visual novel. The developer confirmed in December 2025 that The Longing is back in active development with a script target of 12–18 months from that date. This is an entirely separate game with its own Steam page, and does not represent additional content planned for The Remainder. The Remainder itself is complete.

About this game

You wake in a collapsing tower with no memory. The only other person here—a silver-tongued mage named Ilar—claims to be saving your life through a desperate ritual. Yet, their story keeps changing and you keep dying.

This is Chronicles of Taldun: the Remainder, a dark fantasy visual novel where death is not the end—it's how you learn the truth.

Play as Vyn, a High Magus trapped with Ilar in a tower that's tearing itself apart. Each death reveals another fragment of memory, another piece of the mystery. Were you colleagues? Lovers? Enemies? The deeper you dig, the less certain you become, and the more you realize Ilar may not be trying to save you at all.

Read between the lines. Explore for clues. Use hands-on deduction to break the vicious circle and set them both free.

What Awaits You:

  • 172,000 words of bittersweet psychological horror (8-40 hours)

  • Over 500 choices, some more regrettable than others.

  • 50+ false endings and 3 true endings—dying teaches you how to live
