Evaluation

Dark Bestiary launched into Early Access in 2019 and graduated to its full 1.0 release on July 12, 2020. At launch, the developer (a solo developer, Ivan Karlashenko) posted a note explaining that the game had reached everything he originally envisioned, while also stating he intended to continue supporting and improving it. Following the 1.0 release, the developer shipped a major free update in January 2021 (v1.1.0), which added an entirely new "Dreams" game mode with new equipment, mechanics, and a sanity system. A further feature patch (v1.1.1) arrived in October 2021, delivering a full skill system rework and several new skills. After October 16, 2021, no further developer communications, patches, or content have been recorded across the 23 posts scanned. That's a silence of over four and a half years since the last update. The developer had previously been transparent about reduced capacity (noting in December 2019 that he had taken a day job and could only work on the game in spare hours), which is consistent with a solo developer quietly concluding support rather than making a formal announcement. With no unreleased DLC, no outstanding roadmap commitments, and no developer activity since October 2021, the game is best understood as a complete, finished product.

About this game

Dark Bestiary is a turn-based tactic game with RPG elements. The very core of the game consists of continuous and exciting battles with monsters rather than a deep story. So, you will have to explore a rich combat system and discover your character’s possibilities. You can create unique combinations of tens of skills, talents, and items. Flexible classless character progression will allow you to bring any idea to life: create an inquisitor, spirit-caller, necromancer, or even eldritch archer… you are limited only by your own imagination.

There are many different ways of fighting enemies in Dark Bestiary: quick wit, relying on your companions, using brute force, or powerful spells. All abilities in the game can be combined into sets, each set gives you additional passive bonuses and allows for more in-depth tuning of your character.
