Dark Roll launched as a free-to-play ball-rolling platformer on August 1, 2019. The developer added meaningful content via a patch on February 28, 2020, introducing the Endless Roll game mode, Baby Mode difficulty, 10 new achievements, and 17 unlockable skins. This fulfilled the content plans the developer had hinted at in the August 24, 2019 post, which mentioned plans to expand the game "in new, various, fun and exciting ways."
Since February 2020, all developer communications have focused on other projects rather than updates to Dark Roll itself: a spin-off (Dark Roll: Free Kick Challenge, released August 5, 2021), an unrelated game (J-Jump Arena, announced July 17, 2022), and most recently a full sequel — Dark Roll 2 — announced on March 11, 2026, with a playable demo released on July 16, 2026. The sequel announcement and demo confirm that the developer's creative focus has moved on from the original game.
