Evaluation

Darkout launched on December 4, 2013 and received a series of patches and feature updates through late 2014 and into early 2015. On May 3, 2015, the developer (Allgraf) published a detailed status update acknowledging serious financial difficulties and announcing a significant change in plans: Stages 2 through 4 of the game — which were to include a new biome, additional story chapters, and new enemies — would be released as paid DLC rather than free updates. The developer also announced a companion game ("Project Darklings") intended to generate funding to help complete Darkout. That May 3, 2015 post is the last official communication from the developer on Steam. No further patches, DLC releases, or announcements have appeared since then — a gap stretching to June 28, 2026. The promised Stages 2–4 DLC were never listed on the store and were never released. There is no subsequent developer statement clarifying whether these plans were cancelled, indefinitely postponed, or still being pursued. The developer's own admission of financial strain and dwindling manpower, combined with over a decade of complete silence, strongly suggests development has ceased — but without an explicit closure announcement, the status of those originally promised content stages remains unresolved.

About this game

Crashed and alone on a world mankind tried to leave behind, Darkout challenges players to survive on Illuna, in harsh, procedurally generated biomes, utilizing the game’s sandbox features to build shelters, craft weapons, and research new technologies.

You are not alone. Light-sensitive creatures prowling the landscapes become most active at night and in a world shrouded by clouds the security of day will never come, instead, twilight periods allow players minor security to explore, rebuild, and gather resources.

Darkout’s deep history manifests itself through logs left behind by others, some recent, while others hearken back to long-extinct natives of Illuna, offering glimpses into what events led up to the pandemonium that now persists.

How will you survive?
