Data Hacker: Initiation launched on July 21, 2014 as the first entry in the Datastream saga. Following launch, the developer shipped several updates and additions: achievements were added on November 19, 2014, a free dungeon (the Grindhouse) was added on January 28, 2015, and a New Year update on January 8, 2015 added bonus content and balance changes. The soundtrack DLC released on May 11, 2015. The game is explicitly designed as the first part of a series — its sequel Data Hacker: Corruption launched on October 22, 2014, and a third title, Data Hacker: Reboot, launched in April 2015. After Reboot's release, the developer's public communications shifted entirely to promoting other games (Atonement 2 in October 2016 and State of Anarchy: Master of Mayhem in March 2017), with no further updates posted for Initiation itself. The last post specifically referencing Initiation's own content was the Grindhouse dungeon update on January 28, 2015. All DLC is released, no future content has been announced, and the developer's attention moved on to other titles years ago. The store description frames Initiation as the opening chapter of a series whose subsequent entries have already shipped, and there is no indication of any further updates planned for this specific title.

Set some years in the future, following a global economic and social crash, Data Hacker Initiation follows Jay; a retired hacker in search of vengeance. Jay is a prolific player of Online World: the escapist's dream game in a backwards-future, until an ironic case of mistaken identity, whereupon he is banished from the refuge that he so loved.
Enraged, Jay seeks to re-enter the game with a new agenda: wreak havoc for the administrators and key-holders of Online World. Little does he know; he is about to enter upon something great, and terrible- a twist that nobody saw coming.
