Evaluation

Dead Cells launched out of Early Access on August 6, 2018, and received an extensive post-launch content run spanning nearly six years. The game shipped nine major updates and four paid DLC expansions, the last of which — Return to Castlevania — launched on March 6, 2023. The final major free update, Update 35: "The End is Near," shipped on August 19, 2024, and brought new enemies, weapons, mutations, skins, and accessibility improvements. On February 9, 2024 (before Update 35 shipped), Motion Twin published an explicit developer statement confirming that "Update 35 for Dead Cells marks the end of our creative journey on the game. After an incredible 5-year collaboration in bringing additional content..." This is a clear, unambiguous declaration that creative development on Dead Cells is complete. Update 35 then shipped as promised on August 19, 2024, fulfilling that final commitment. All eight DLC entries in the store listing are released. Motion Twin has since moved on to their new project, Windblown, which launched in Early Access on October 24, 2024. The studio that handled much of Dead Cells' post-launch content, Evil Empire, has moved on to develop an entirely new Castlevania game in partnership with KONAMI. A stability patch was issued on June 15, 2026, confirming the team continues light maintenance work on Dead Cells — but the developer explicitly notes this is maintenance only while they focus on Windblown, not new creative content. Mobile platform parity was completed in February 2025, with all updates now available across every platform. Dead Cells is a complete game. Anyone waiting to play the full experience can do so now with no content outstanding.

About this game

Dead Cells is a roguelite, metroidvania inspired, action-platformer. You'll explore a sprawling, ever-changing castle... assuming you’re able to fight your way past its keepers in 2D souls-lite combat. No checkpoints. Kill, die, learn, repeat.

Dead Cells puts you in control of a failed alchemic experiment trying to figure out what's happening on a sprawling, ever-changing and seemingly cursed Island. Immortal but crippled, your last resort is to take over bodies in order to move, explore… and fight.

While you may well be immortal, the corpses you possess are not. Each time your host is destroyed, you will be sent back to the dungeon to find yourself a new one and start again...

Experience a Roguevania, mixing an interconnected world, branching paths and unlockable skills with the constant adrenaline-pumping threat of permadeath. No checkpoints. You either vanquish the final boss in one go or you try again. However, you keep some of your progress for successive runs new paths you’ve unlocked, access to new levels, mutations, abilities and weapons.

Tough but fair combat, responsive controls, challenging foes, and of course, the emergency panic roll to get you out of trouble make for a visceral and cathartic action game.
