Evaluation

Death and Taxes launched on February 20, 2020 and received a major Halloween update in October 2020, which the developer described at the time as completing their original vision for the game. However, the studio has continued revisiting the game with additional content since then — most notably adding hats and character customization in March 2024 — and has communicated ongoing intentions to add more. The most recent developer communication about Death and Taxes came on January 19, 2026, when the developer wrote: "Do keep an eye out for an update for Death and Taxes sometime this year hopefully as well. What it may be, well, it's a bit of a secret." This is a clear, if vague, statement of intent to ship further content in 2026. A June 2025 post also acknowledged community anticipation for an endless/sandbox mode ("not as serious as the other ones... It might not be the update you've been hoping for (*cough*endlessmode*cough*)"), signaling awareness of outstanding community requests the developer may still address. The studio (Placeholder Gameworks) has been transparent that their attention has been divided across multiple projects, including CraftCraft and Broken Alliance. Despite this, they have repeatedly and explicitly stated their intention to return to Death and Taxes. As of today (October 8, 2026), the teased 2026 update has not been confirmed as shipped, and no follow-up post has described completing or delivering it. The January 2026 post remains the last developer communication about the game, and the promised update has not been publicly accounted for.
Evidence
Developer teases an unspecified update for Death and Taxes 'sometime this year hopefully,' calling it 'a bit of a secret.' This is the most recent developer communication about the game.
