Evaluation

Disminal launched on May 2, 2024 as a first-person backrooms walking simulator by solo developer Brian Gonnet, and has received consistent post-launch updates since then. On September 25, 2026 — just six days before today — the developer posted a detailed announcement about Disminal 2.0, confirming it is planned to release near the end of October 2026. This major update will add a new elevator system that connects different areas of the game like a bus line, as well as entirely new locations to explore. The developer describes this as something he has been planning since shortly after the game originally launched. A more realistic camera controller is also in the works, potentially shipping alongside or shortly after the elevator update. The developer explained that personal circumstances (moving three times in one year) and work on a separate project (Mazewar) caused delays, but that Disminal's success has now allowed him to pursue game development full-time. Earlier in 2026, the developer shipped a full menu redesign and technical overhaul in February, control hints and resolution options in March, a new achievements system in April, and an Android port that went through closed beta testing in June and July 2026. The announced 2.0 update is specific, named, and targeted for October 2026.

About this game

Disminal is a First Person Exploration/Walking Simulator experience set in the backrooms where you will be able to wonder through some of it's unsettling and vacant places, is there an exit to be found? or will you be staying here forever, lost between two worlds.

This game will focus merely on immersion and appreciation of aesthetics.

  • Most zones/sections in the game are greatly influenced by YouTube videos and images depicting liminal spaces

  • Featuring a 'MPEG' mode which graphically mimics the artifacts seen in actual low quality videos so as to enhance the immersion.
