Evaluation

Driftland: The Magic Revival launched out of Early Access on April 18, 2019. Following its 1.0 release, it received a notable post-launch update: the "Big Dragon Update" on June 5, 2019 added the fourth and final story campaign along with new multiplayer modes. The developer explicitly described this as completing the story. A second major update — Driftland 2.0 — arrived on June 25, 2020, adding the Nomads faction as a new game mode, cross-play, a new tutorial, and various other improvements. That update represents the last substantial content addition to the game. Since June 25, 2020, the developer's communication on the Driftland page has largely been focused on promoting their next title, First Dwarf — a spin-off set in the same universe. A February 2024 post added a minor update (logo addition and bug fixes) but contained no new gameplay content. The most recent post from May 22, 2026 confirms the game's expansion to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, and the developer describes Driftland as a world "we are still developing, exploring and expanding in different directions" — however, this refers to the broader franchise and the separately-released First Dwarf, not to new content coming to Driftland: The Magic Revival itself. No new DLC, expansions, or updates for the base game have been announced. The single DLC listed — the Soundtrack — was released on May 3, 2019 and is fully shipped. There are no unreleased DLC entries on the store. The game shipped with a complete campaign across all four races, multiplayer, and the Nomads game mode. Star Drifters has not announced any further content for Driftland: The Magic Revival, and the development team's focus has clearly shifted to First Dwarf.

About this game

After a devastating war between ancient mages, a powerful spell is all that holds together the shattered planet of Driftland. Faced with the destruction of their entire civilization and life on the planet, the warring factions called a truce and tried to repair the damage – but it was already too late. By using all their remaining magic to cast a powerful spell, they managed to keep their world in relative balance.

Many dark ages passed, but when all seemed lost, a ray of hope emerged once more: new sources of magic appeared, and new mages were given birth to across the planet. Now, as the dormant conflicts once again surface, this rediscovered power will determine whether Driftland is restored to its former glory or wiped from the cosmos entirely.

You take on the role of a Mage Overlord with your own castle, tower, and a small realm on one of the landmasses. With your unique powers, you can explore a procedurally generated world and connect floating lands to expand your kingdom.

Gameplay focuses on setting general goals for all your units without the need to micromanage each of them. The warriors, archers, and mages under your command are able to tame and ride different kinds of flying beasts and create various aerial units.

  • Procedurally generated world
  • Resource- and magic-based economy
  • Move and terraform scattered landmasses with magic
  • Tame and ride dragons and other creatures
  • Explore and fight on the same map
  • Set goals instead of directly controlling units
  • Single player, campaigns, and multiplayer
