Evaluation

Drone Sector entered Steam Early Access on July 21, 2026, and remains in that phase. The developer, Ingmar Trump (solo developer under Icosphere), published a detailed roadmap on July 22, 2026 outlining a wide range of planned additions — new ground vehicles, weekly challenge missions with leaderboards, new maps, persistent squad management, more infantry squad types, and longer-term systems like environmental hazards and helicopters. Since launch, the developer has been delivering on those plans at a consistent pace. Between July 21 and September 14, 2026, six updates have shipped: pathfinding improvements (v0.1.4, July 31), a combat systems overhaul (v0.1.5, August 11), anti-air balance fixes (v0.1.6, August 17), vehicle mounting and dismounting — one of the most-requested features — (v0.2.0, August 24), HUD and vehicle improvements (v0.2.1, August 31), and a new spotting and accuracy system (v0.3.0, September 14). The developer's post with v0.3.0 also mentions ongoing background work on externally configurable unit stats and a new road generation system, signaling continued active development. MicroProse joined as publisher in August 2025, contributing art assets and voice acting, while the developer remains the sole programmer and designer. The game has received strong early player reception (88% positive from 383 reviews as of September 21, 2026). Many roadmap items — including persistent squad management, weekly challenges, specialized infantry squads, and the long-term systems — remain unshipped, with development clearly ongoing.

About this game

Futuristic Drone Gunship

Drone Sector fuses the gunship close air support role with the drone's observation and mission command. Inspired by the real-life AC-130 gunship and MQ-9 Reaper drone, it merges these powerful roles in a futuristic setting, where advanced technology and heavier firepower enable you to take on more complex and dangerous missions. While not a pure military simulator, the focus remains on tactical planning and execution, with greater flexibility in mission design and weaponry.

Mission Control

Guide your squads as they advance through hostile environments to achieve mission objectives. Command with precision, helping them avoid traps and eliminating high-priority threats with your overwhelming firepower. Outnumbered by enemy forces, you’ll need to maximize your technological superiority to turn the tide.

Mission-to-Mission Progression

During each mission, you’ll need to make strategic decisions about resource gathering. Send your ground squads into buildings or key areas to collect vital resources and research documents—but this comes with risk. Stay too long, and you may lose your squad to overwhelming enemy forces. Decide when to extract and when to push your luck for valuable rewards.

Between missions back at base, upgrade your gunship, squads, and weapons. Manage your ammo production and research new technologies to improve your chances in the field.
