Escape the Mad Empire entered Early Access on April 22, 2025 and remains in that phase. The developer, XperimentalZ Games, has been consistently delivering major content updates throughout Early Access: Update 0.18 launched on September 4, 2025 (adding 50+ new items, monsters, and systems overhauls), Update 0.19.0 on November 27, 2025 (4 new biomes, 31 new monsters), Update 0.20.0 on May 7, 2026 (raised party level cap, new dungeon events), and Update 0.21 on June 18, 2026 (new instability/thirst options, new items, and a training dummy). A hotfix followed on June 22, 2026, confirming the developer remains active as of that date. On May 1, 2026, the developer made a significant announcement: they parted ways with their publisher Paradox Arc and are now self-publishing the game. Critically, this allowed them to extend development beyond what was originally planned. The original plan was to release version 1.0 in March 2026 and then effectively wind down development. Under the new arrangement, the developer has committed to continuing development, with a revised roadmap that includes: addressing recurring player concerns, releasing the end-game content update originally planned for 1.0, consulting players on additional QoL and content, and targeting a 1.0 release in fall 2026 or early 2027. Post-1.0, they listed several potential additions including an Arena mode, an Archer class, a standalone roguelike mode, a Competences/Feats system, and a Races system. The content updates shipping in May and June 2026 confirm that this extended development commitment is already being actively delivered. There is a clear and specific roadmap for both pre-1.0 and post-1.0 content, with the game still in Early Access and substantial development ahead.
