Evaluation

Eschaton is a short, self-contained first-person exploration game that launched on November 3, 2022. At launch, the developer announced plans for a "big chunky update" including two new story content pieces titled "Memory" and "Decision," a speedrun mode, achievements, and controller support. Over the weeks and months following launch, the developer shipped several updates: controller support arrived in patch 1.05B on November 8, 2022; achievements and Steam Deck compatibility followed in v1.1 on November 27, 2022; and v1.2 on May 8, 2023 delivered bug fixes and audio/visual improvements. Notably, the two named story content pieces ("Memory" and "Decision") that were announced at launch do not appear to have shipped as distinct updates — none of the post-launch patch notes reference them by name. However, the v1.2 patch in May 2023 appears to be the last substantive update to the game, and no subsequent announcements of additional content have been made. The developer's most recent communication, on April 3, 2026, addressed the removal and replacement of five AI-generated paintings in the game — a targeted content change with no mention of future updates or new content. With no outstanding announced content, no unreleased DLC on the store, and developer communications that focus on maintenance rather than future additions, the game appears to have reached its final state. The original story content promises from the launch announcement were either quietly absorbed into existing patches, quietly dropped, or never explicitly reaffirmed after 2022 — and the developer has made no mention of them since. May 8, 2023 (the last meaningful content patch) is the most defensible completion date.

About this game

"I have come to tell you that you are free. Many ages ago, My consciousness left man, that he might develop himself. I return to find this development approaching completion, but hindered by fear and by misunderstanding."

Your final gift to humanity, stolen in its final moments. An unheard of conspiracy spanning millennia snuffed in it's final act, only to be reborn.

It's the 23rd of May, 2023 and you are about to end the world.

Story

You don't remember. A crashed van at the gates of a manor, a dead driver. A cold chilling fog pushes you towards the entrance where the door is curiously open. Reality ends here.

Presented in a late 90's low-poly style inspired by the fifth generation of games consoles, Eschaton is a short, surreal, first person exploration game set in the Scottish Highlands. Explore the grounds of an abandoned manor, analyse the environment, talk to beings who don't quite make sense, experience a short surreal trip that lasts until midnight.

Headphones are recommended; Eschaton uses binaural beats to instil fear / tension / aid focus and change your state of mind at certain points of the game.
