Evaluation
Gary Grigsby's War in the East launched on Steam on July 9, 2015, arriving with both of its DLC packs (Lost Battles and Don to the Danube) already released on the same day. The game received a series of substantial feature patches and balance updates from 2016 through mid-2018, with the last official update (v1.11.03) released on June 15, 2018. No further updates to this game have been posted since that date.
The developer's attention shifted to the franchise's future: in February 2021, 2by3 Games began teasing War in the East 2 with community After Action Reports, and on December 10, 2021, War in the East 2 launched on Steam as a complete overhaul and successor to this title. The developer explicitly described War in the East 2 as "a complete overhaul and improvement of the original War in the East." This signals that the original game's development had concluded and successor work had shipped.
Both DLC entries are released, no unreleased DLC exists, no future content has been announced for this title, and developer communication for this specific game effectively ended in June 2018. The game launched as a finished product with its DLC included from day one, and all subsequent post-launch patches have now been delivered. This is a complete, self-contained strategy game.
Evidence
War in the East 2 launched on Steam as a complete overhaul and successor to the original game, indicating the original's development cycle had concluded and resources moved to the sequel.
Final official patch (v1.11.03) released for War in the East. No further updates have been posted after this date.
