Evaluation

Going Medieval launched at version 1.0 on March 17, 2026 after a lengthy Early Access period. Since launch, Foxy Voxel has maintained an exceptionally active development pace, publishing a weekly developer blog series called "Medieval Monday Talks" and shipping regular patches. The most significant development signal comes from the two most recent blog posts. On August 17, 2026 (MMT #84), the developer detailed an upcoming diplomacy system allowing players to negotiate deals with factions — including military support, caravan protection, peace deals, and faction envoys visiting your settlement. On August 31, 2026 (MMT #86), they previewed a hired hands / mercenary system tied to the diplomacy feature, where players can hire temporary workers and fighters using gold coins. Both posts explicitly describe features still being worked on and not yet in the game. The team shipped a major "Quality of Life" update (version 1.1.7) on July 9, 2026, introducing structure replacement, an item repair system, overhauled settler mood and perk behaviors, and new animal controls. This is the third major content update since the 1.0 launch. A follow-up feature patch (1.1.19) shipped on August 14, 2026 with further quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes. The developer's communication cadence has been continuous and unbroken — the last post was just two days ago (August 31, 2026), and prior to that posts have come weekly. Both DLC items (Supporter Pack and Soundtrack) are already released. The upcoming diplomacy and mercenary content represents specifically announced, unshipped features actively in development.

About this game

When civilization is decimated by rampant plague, a lucky few emerge from the ashes. Help them settle in a dangerous wilderness reclaimed by nature. Build them a home, shape their lives, and defend them from bandits and beasts in a lawless, realistic post-calamity world. The Dark Age is yours to rebuild.

From three lost travellers to a thriving walled city, build greatness from desolation. Use 3D terrain tools to create the perfect stronghold, from sprawling multi-storey forts to winding underground caverns. Construct, furnish and decorate your chambers, workshops, chapels, libraries and more, using stone, clay, and other gathered materials.

Each settler is a unique character. Consider Grimbold, for example. As a Swineherd, his Animal Handling is second to none. But his personality is Savage, so he’d make a strong Brawler. He likes nice clothes, his religion is dear to him — and he’s hungry. Satisfy Grimbold’s needs, use his talents, and he’ll be a happy settler — key to a happy settlement.

Build impenetrable defenses and set traps against unrelenting waves of raiders. Research and craft medieval tech, arm your settlers and command them in battle. Tailor your strategy to your villager’s skills, and upgrade them through hunting and combat.

Explore your randomly-generated multi-level map and manipulate it to your will. Terraform the earth and water for construction, design, or military strategy. Build up or dig down, go humble or baronial, and use the modding tools to unearth a whole new level of creative freedom.
