Evaluation
On April 12, 2022, the developer (Aaron) published a heartfelt post announcing that IronWolf VR was leaving Early Access and that feature development was officially complete. The reason is personal: Aaron's co-developer and childhood friend Phil passed away in late 2020, and Aaron explained that further development would require replacing much of Phil's original work — something he is not emotionally willing to do. He stated clearly that the game's feature development is done, and that he intends only to maintain the game with bug fix releases going forward.
There was a later return to activity: in July 2023, Aaron announced a free standalone non-VR edition of the game, which shipped in September 2023. This was a companion product (a free spin-off to help players find friends to co-op with), not new content for the core game. The accompanying announcement noted Aaron hoped to bring "quality of life features and possibly new content if there's still enough interest," but no specific content was committed to, and subsequent posts (through January 2024) were purely bug fixes. There has been no developer communication since January 16, 2024.
Taken together, the developer's explicit April 2022 statement that feature development is complete is the definitive word on the game's content status. The free non-VR edition was a companion release, not an expansion of the VR game's content. The game launched as its completed form on April 12, 2022.
Evidence
Developer Aaron explicitly announced the game is leaving Early Access with feature development officially marked as complete. He stated he will not add further features due to emotional ties to his late co-developer's work, and will only provide maintenance and bug fix releases going forward.
The free Non-VR Edition launched as a standalone companion product. Also added Xbox/PlayStation controller support to both editions.
