Evaluation
Islands of the Caliph launched on September 29, 2023 as a solo-developed old-school action RPG. Since launch, the developer (Schmidt Workshops) has maintained a steady and engaged update cadence through June 2026, with 50 developer posts recorded — including 2 major content updates, 11 feature patches, and 25 bug fixes.
The two major updates added substantial multilingual support: Chinese and German languages arrived in October 2025 (v1.3.6), followed by Indonesian, Spanish, and Portuguese in March 2026 (v1.3.7). The developer has been actively working on this multilingual expansion since at least December 2024, when the underlying text system was overhauled to support Unicode. A further bug fix update was posted as recently as June 5, 2026, addressing AMD graphics compatibility in the multilingual branch.
In the March 2026 update, the developer also mentioned working on a new game — indicating the studio remains active — while still actively patching and improving Islands of the Caliph. Feature patches have introduced quality-of-life improvements like camera movement rework (March 2026), moon phase display in the quest log (March 2024), and shared city storage chests (October 2023).
No specific future content has been announced, but the developer has shown no signs of wrapping up support. The consistent update history — spanning nearly three years with no extended silences — establishes this as a game that continues to receive active care from its developer.
