Evaluation

Kainga: Seeds of Civilization launched out of Early Access on December 6, 2022 and has since received two major post-launch content updates: Update 1.1 "Life of Spice" (announced June 27, 2023) and Update 1.2 "Points of Interest" (released June 8, 2025). These updates added new creatures, technologies, map modifiers, house types, points of interest, and other substantial content. The most recent developer communications paint a picture of a game that is actively maintained but whose developer's primary focus has shifted. In a February 2025 post, the developer (a solo developer named Erik Rempen) announced the formation of his studio Silk Softworks and previewed his new project, ShantyTown. The June 2025 Update 1.2 post acknowledged that he "jumps back into Kainga occasionally" while dedicating most of his time to ShantyTown. He also floated the idea of a "Skies and Caves" DLC and a potential "Kainga 2," describing both as exploratory ideas rather than firm commitments. On April 16, 2026, the developer posted to the Kainga page announcing ShantyTown's 1.0 release and noted that after ShantyTown's launch, he would be "weighing options on what to work on next" — explicitly mentioning Kainga 2, a medieval RPG, or "something else," and promising to involve the community in that decision. He also mentioned doing a small patch to Kainga around that time. The most recent post to the Kainga page is a bug fix patch (1.2.21) on June 25, 2025, addressing UI issues from Update 1.2. Today's date is June 25, 2026 — exactly one year after that patch — meaning there has been no Kainga-specific developer communication since June 25, 2025, aside from the April 16, 2026 ShantyTown launch post which briefly mentioned Kainga. The two major updates arrived roughly 18 months apart (June 2023 and June 2025), establishing a long cadence. We are now approximately 12 months past Update 1.2, which is within that 18-month window. However, the developer's April 2026 post explicitly frames the next steps as undecided — he stated he would weigh options after ShantyTown's launch, with no specific Kainga content announced. The floated "Skies and Caves" DLC from June 2025 was framed as an idea ("I've been toying with the idea"), not a commitment, and has not been reaffirmed since. No unreleased DLC exists on the store. Because no specific future content for Kainga has been formally committed to, and the developer's post-ShantyTown plans remain openly undecided, there is no concrete basis to flag planned content. At the same time, the developer has not stated that Kainga is finished — the April 2026 post leaves the door open to continued work. Given the long update cadence and the developer's acknowledgment that his attention is divided, the game sits in a completed state as of the last shipped update, with the possibility of future content remaining open but unannounced.
Evidence
Developer announced ShantyTown's 1.0 release on the Kainga page. Briefly noted a small Kainga patch and stated he would 'weigh options on what to work on next' after ShantyTown's launch — mentioning Kainga 2, a medieval RPG, or other projects — with no specific Kainga content committed.

Update 1.2 'Points of Interest' released with substantial new content. Developer noted he 'jumps back into Kainga occasionally' while focusing primarily on ShantyTown. Floated a 'Skies and Caves' DLC as an idea and mentioned 'Kainga 2' as a possibility, but made no firm commitments to either.

About this game

Welcome to the mystical world of Kainga!

Magical lands full of wonder and beauty, where strange other-worldly beasts roam. Take control of a Thinker and grow your village into a thriving civilization, adapting and surviving against all odds.

Can you master the beautiful but dangerous lands of Kainga?

Complete Challenges:

Kainga: Seeds of Civilization is a unique roguelite-inspired village-builder. Instead of a long-winded city-builder, Kainga is played in short 30-90 minute “runs” where you complete challenges to keep unlocking new maps, Thinkers and unusual technologies.

You play as a Thinker, the village leader, who has to explore the world to find sources of inspiration to discover new technologies to grow your town. Choosing the right technologies that fit your town's need, the environment, challenge and your playstyle is the key to success.

  • Build, Adapt, Survive
As the Thinker you must use your knowledge of Kainga to lead your tribe, learn through trial and error how to adapt to your surroundings and develop a village that can flourish while protecting your Thinker at all costs. Each Thinker has their own strengths, weaknesses and playstyle.
  • Encounter Mysterious and Dangerous Creatures
Colossal creatures can be found lurking throughout Kainga’s varied biomes, often hidden in the sea or deep underground. Learn to live in harmony with them, tame them and add them to your economy or use their strength in combat against your rivals.
  • Explore Beautiful and Threatening Lands
Discover what the 8 unique biomes have to offer, each with its own environment and challenges to overcome. Lead your tribe to adapt and survive across barren deserts, tropical archipelagos, icy mountains, lush jungles and some of the most unusual landscapes in any city-builder.
  • Pick up the Pieces and Try Again
Death is not the end. Learn from your failures and begin again in a new world. Between games you’ll be able to use Karma to unlock new biomes, technologies, and Thinkers. Expand your knowledge of the world of Kainga to increase your chances of success in the future!
