Evaluation

Love Stories: When Pastel Meets Grotesque is an ongoing anthology visual novel that a solo developer has been continuously expanding since its March 29, 2022 launch. New stories are added as free updates, and the developer has been transparent about what remains in the pipeline. The most recent major update posted on September 15, 2026 — just one day before today's assessment date — delivered the "Memories: University Chapter" (回忆之物:大学篇) story and added voice acting to "Another Afternoon's Story" (另一个下午的故事). This confirms the developer is actively shipping content right up to the present. Multiple named stories remain explicitly undelivered. A December 31, 2024 year-end post named three stories still in development: "The Kidnapped Witch" (被诱拐的魔女) reading chapter, "Hell Dependency" (地狱依存症), and "Reality" (现实). The September 30, 2025 development update provided a detailed progress report on "The Kidnapped Witch," describing how the developer had finally completed the full narrative structure for the story and characterizing it as the most complex entry in the game yet — one that will advance the overarching main storyline. That same post also teased additional planned features such as expanded character interaction and Steam community items. The game's short description on the store explicitly calls it "a collection of long-updated short stories," which accurately reflects the developer's sustained behavior. Both DLC listings are marked as released, but these represent pass-style purchases covering future story additions the developer is still actively producing. The developer went through a significant engine migration from KiriKiri to Unity throughout 2024, completing it in early 2025, representing a major infrastructure investment in the game's long-term future. Throughout this period and after, the developer maintained regular communication and continued shipping updates on roughly a 3–6 month cadence for major story content.

Make their worlds into books,
The girl sits at the desk and sips coffee invites you to read books together.
To interprets the world again as her reciter?
Or try to resist the fate in the book and arbitrarily modify the ending of the story?
Although it is your freedom but it is at your own risk.
—SisselA Kayla

"I" lost my memory and woke up in a large library, and the white-haired girl in front of me invited me to read the book for her.
Every time I start reading, "I" enters the world depicted in the book and becomes someone who is not "I" to experiences the whole story.
"I" also has the right to be called "reenactment" by the girl, and the action of changing the character with "I" will lead the story to a different ending.
