Evaluation

Originally released as "Malice" on November 2, 2022, Nimbus Games announced on June 10, 2026 that they were rebuilding the game and rebranding it as "Escape: Malice." Rather than releasing the full rebuilt game at once, the developer confirmed an episodic delivery format with three acts. Act 1 of the rebuilt game launched on July 31, 2026 as a free update for all existing owners, featuring a new network engine, reworked puzzles, updated story content, and improved audio and visuals. The July 31, 2026 update post explicitly reassures players that Acts 2 and 3 are still coming, stating "our team is hard at work to present our vision for Escape: Malice in its best possible form." Both Act 2 and Act 3 remain undelivered but are confirmed as planned for later in 2026.

About this game

Escape: Malice is a two-player only co-op horror puzzle adventure that combines escape room-inspired challenges, exploration, and Japanese-inspired supernatural terror.

Invite a friend to play as a pair of travellers who visit a mysterious temple in modern-day Japan. A sudden earthquake creates a sinkhole and plunges you both into the darkness, where you land in front of a foreboding mansion. Navigate your way through the ancient building and uncover dark secrets while surviving from malicious inhabitants who lurk in the shadows. The only way out of this hellhole is going deeper in… so put on your thinking caps, communicate, and work together if either of you ever wants to see the light of day again.

NOTE: This game can only be played with two players — no more, no less.

Unique Story & Lore

A unique storyline that spans multiple eras, dropping players directly into the mystery. Players will journey to different locations of an ancient Edo-era settlement, ending in an unspeakable dimension where something even more sinister lies waiting…

Play through three chapters and discover the history and secrets of the mansion and its inhabitants through hand-drawn cutscenes and numerous character interactions.

Atmospheric Environments

Dive into an intense, foreboding atmosphere with terrifying audio design and visuals that will completely immerse the player in the game world.

The game art captures a unique mix of realism and stylization, giving players a sense of the uncanny, enveloping them in a dreamlike environment, and enhancing the nightmarish experience.

Challenging Puzzles

Players will face a variety of puzzles on their journey out of the sunken mansion. Experience a mind-bending mix of logical, lateral, and decryption puzzles alongside old-fashioned mazes, all intensified by a two-player co-operative twist. Imagine a real-life escape room completely unrestricted by physical constraints!

2 Player Co-op

Malice is a mandatory two-player co-op experience intended to be played with a partner. Maybe you’ll be safer in the depths with a friend… Who do you trust to help get you out alive?
