Marathon launched on March 5, 2026 as a seasonal live service title from Bungie. It has been in continuous active development across two full seasons with substantial content confirmed for the months ahead. Season 1 ran from launch through June 1, 2026, featuring a mid-season update on April 14, 2026 that introduced the C.A.R.R.I. cooperative rewards initiative. Season 2 began June 2, 2026, adding a new zone (Dire Marsh at Night), a new Sentinel Runner shell, two new weapons, a Cradle progression system, and extensive sandbox and matchmaking improvements. A mid-season update on July 21, 2026 introduced Vault Breaker, Marathon's first experimental PvE mode. On September 14, 2026, Bungie announced a significant schedule change: the Season 3 update originally planned for September 22 was delayed. Content was reorganized into two upcoming milestones — a lighter October 6 "Nightfall Refresh" (progression reset, new Rewards Pass, quality-of-life improvements) and the more substantial December 8 "Symbiosis" update, which will introduce Marathon's first permanent PvE experience, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a new Runner shell, a social space with a firing range, and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode. The developer also referenced continued development into March 2026 and beyond. On September 21, 2026 — today — Bungie's new leadership (Studio Head Poria Torkan and GM of Marathon Josh Deane) published a major studio direction post. They explicitly stated that Marathon "needs to evolve" and committed to expanding it into "a deeper survival experience" with more ways to engage across PvE, PvP, and PvPvE. They confirmed the October and December updates are still on track and that the team will continue shaping the game's future based on player feedback. This is the most recent developer communication and represents a clear, high-priority commitment to ongoing development. All three DLC items listed on the store — the Spectral Mist bundle, the Deluxe Upgrade, and the LUX Fun//Police bundle — have been released. The game's seasonal structure (with Rewards Passes, rotating cosmetic bundles, and regularly refreshed content) is consistent with an indefinitely ongoing live service model. Bungie has not indicated any intention to conclude development.
