Evaluation

Monster Slayers launched in March 2017 and received consistent updates through 2017, including six new classes in April 2017 and the Fire & Steel expansion in May 2017. After a period under a publisher arrangement, the developer (Nerdook) reclaimed full control of the game in December 2025 and immediately resumed active development. Since regaining control, the developer has shipped a string of updates: v1.5.2 on December 3, 2025 (engine port to GameMaker Studio 2, new hand-drawn sprites), v1.5.3 on December 6, 2025 (bug fixes and card rebalancing), and most recently v1.5.5 on September 18, 2026 — a substantial free update adding full localization in 7 languages, a reworked Companion system, a reworked Altar system with new Eldritch cards, new card types (Afflictions and Fatigue cards), and new and updated artwork including redrawn and reanimated monsters. The developer's September 18, 2026 post is warm and engaged, describing the update as "HUGE" and encouraging players to revisit the game. No statement has been made that development is concluded. The developer remains clearly active — both on Monster Slayers and on their new title, Cyberpunk Inquisitor. Both DLC items are released and all prior content has shipped, but the pattern of ongoing free updates indicates the developer continues to support and add to the game.

About this game

Developed by Nerdook (Reverse Crawl, Vertical Drop Heroes), Monster Slayers is a complete reimagining of the free web-based hit of the same name, which has been played over 4 million times on gaming portal, Kongregate.

A rogue-like deck-building RPG adventure (and one of the very few released BEFORE Slay the Spire), Monster Slayers uses an innovative card-based battle system and lets you customize a deck to suit your play style. Create a new hero to join the Monster Slayers Guild and choose your path through the perilous Northern Valley as you follow your quest to defeat the legendary Harbinger and become a true Monster Slayer.

  • Battle undead goblins, lion outlaws, mighty dragons and other monstrous foes using a unique card-based combat system

  • Strategically shape your deck as you acquire new cards from merchants, treasure chests, and allies

  • Collect fame from each run to unlock new abilities that can be used by future heroes

  • Every playthrough is different: levels, enemy encounters and loot are randomly generated

  • Choose from six different classes: Rogue, Ranger, Knight, Barbarian, Cleric, Wizard

  • Recruit companions to join you on your quest and make use of their special abilities

  • Equip your hero with stat-boosting loot to improve the chances of victory

  • Fight for your place at the top of the Monster Slayers leaderboards

  • Fully translated into 8 different languages!

  • Inspired by the much-loved deck-building RPG, Dream Quest, created by Peter Whalen (Hearthstone)
