Murders on the Yangtze River launched on January 30, 2024 as a complete detective adventure game. Since launch, the developer has remained active with bug fixes, localization improvements, and new content.
In June 2024, the developer announced the first DLC, titled "The Last Magic Trick" (夺命幻戏), a new story case set at a magic theater. However, in December 2024, the developer posted a delay notice explaining that internal testing revealed the case design was fundamentally flawed — the puzzle-solving experience felt anticlimactic — and they made the difficult decision to scrap the script and start over from scratch.
On January 26, 2025, a separate crossover DLC titled "Messages from the Shadow" (幽影密讯) was released for free, incorporating some salvaged elements from the cancelled version of "The Last Magic Trick." The developer used this post to explicitly confirm that "The Last Magic Trick" is still being developed with higher standards, and asked players for patience.
A follow-up patch on January 27, 2025 improved the new DLC's accessibility, and further bug fixes followed through February 2025. The developer also partnered with Loco Motive for a bundle promotion in November 2025, showing continued commercial engagement.
The clearest signal for future content is the developer's own January 2025 statement confirming that "The Last Magic Trick" DLC is still being made. No release date has been given, and no further communication specifically about that DLC's progress has appeared since January 2025. However, the developer has not retracted or abandoned that commitment.
