Evaluation

Over the Alps originally launched on March 31, 2020 by Stave Studios and received two free post-launch content updates: the "King of the Mountain" story expansion (June 12, 2020) and the "A Test of Character" gameplay overhaul (November 27, 2020). The game was always planned as a trilogy of stories, but the original studio (Stave Studios) closed before the third chapter, "The Devil's Quill," could be completed for Steam. On June 18, 2026, Tributary Games — a studio co-founded by several Stave Studios alumni — announced they had taken over as custodians of Over the Alps. They issued a technical update to the Steam version (fixing bugs, updating the Unity engine, and unlocking previously impossible achievements), and simultaneously released "The Devil's Quill" as a free web-based experience on itch.io. This final chapter completes the trilogy with a newly written 42,000-word conclusion by Harry Tuffs. In that same June 18, 2026 post, the studio explicitly described this as "closing the book" on Over the Alps, framing The Devil's Quill as the conclusion fans had been waiting for. The developer's language — "closing the third and final chapter" — makes clear this is the end of the content cycle. The game's content is now complete across both the Steam version and the free web chapter.
Evidence
Tributary Games announces they are now custodians of Over the Alps following Stave Studios' closure. They issued a technical update to the Steam version and released the long-awaited third chapter, 'The Devil's Quill,' for free on itch.io. The post explicitly describes this as 'closing the third and final chapter' and 'closing the book on this one,' signalling the end of the game's content development.

About this game

Uncover a secret history in OVER THE ALPS, the singleplayer narrative game made by Stave Studios and kept alive by custodians Tributary Games.

Go undercover, evade the police, and watch out for an unreasonable amount of goats high in the Swiss Alps. Your only line home is a postcard, written in invisible ink and sent back to your handler.

Featuring two thrilling stories from the pens of Jon Ingold (80 DAYS, OVERBOARD!) and Harry Tuffs (KING OF THE CASTLE, HOUSE OF MANY DOORS), which will see you step back in time to WWII Switzerland's awe-inspiring Alpine countryside, inspired by vintage travel posters, to complete your mission.

From a team with a pedigree of experience (FAILBETTER GAMES, INKLE STUDIOS), OVER THE ALPS tells a sweeping story with over 102,000 words and more than 2,600 choices.

OVER THE ALPS also is available in 15 languages including Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), German, Russian, French and Arabic, and includes controller support.
