Overstep launched into Early Access on November 22, 2019 and received regular updates through late 2020 — including major content drops in March 2020, June 2020, and November 2020, as well as several feature and bug-fix patches throughout that period. However, on July 4, 2023, developer Gamecan published an official announcement stating that they had "shifted all efforts" away from Overstep to a new game called Contenders: Arena. This is the last known communication from the developer regarding Overstep. The game has never received a 1.0 release and remains in Early Access on Steam. With the developer having publicly moved on and no updates delivered since 2023, Overstep appears to be an abandoned Early Access title — still purchasable, but no longer in development.
