Paint Chips launched on May 4, 2021 as a free-to-play online multiplayer shooter and received active updates through late 2021 before the developer acknowledged a slowdown in October 2021, noting that development would slow down for a while. After a significant hiatus, the developer returned in August 2023, announcing a transition to a paid model ($14.99) effective October 1, 2023, with all microtransactions removed. They expressed clear intent to continue development, stating: "We want to continue adding new features, improve gameplay and make the game into something we're proud of." This was followed by three major content releases in quick succession: Update v2.0.0 on October 1, 2023 (a co-op mode, new playlist, announcer, localization, and sweeping changes), Update v2.1.0 on October 17, 2023 (a Halloween seasonal map, new items, new gameplay features), and a follow-up patch v2.1.1 on October 23, 2023. A VIP Pack DLC was also released on October 17, 2023. However, since October 23, 2023, the developer has not posted any updates, patches, announcements, or communications of any kind. Given that the developer was actively posting and updating the game through October 2023 and stated intentions to keep adding content, the prolonged silence through June 23, 2026 raises real uncertainty about whether development is continuing. No statement has been made about the game being finished or development ending.
