Evaluation

Rainbow Reactor launched on May 16, 2019 as a VR puzzle-action game and received a solid run of post-launch updates: major patches adding new game modes (March 2019), a complete music overhaul with 9 new synthwave tracks (April 2019), Index Controller support (July 2019), and the Museum Tour feature (December 2019). A stability update followed in July 2020, and the soundtrack DLC released in January 2020 — all of which are now shipped. In December 2020, the developer announced they were pivoting to work on a new VR title. They later announced Rainbow Reactor: Fusion, a story-mode spin-off, which launched on Oculus Quest in September 2021. A Steam release of Fusion was discussed but repeatedly deprioritized due to the cost of upgrading graphics for PC. The last developer communication about Rainbow Reactor was on October 30, 2023, when the developer posted a seasonal Halloween note and addressed questions about a potential SteamVR version of Fusion. In that post, they explicitly stated they had "not given up" on a Steam version of Fusion but acknowledged it would likely not be financially viable given the performance of their newer title Snow Scout. This was framed as speculation about a separate game (Fusion), not a commitment to update Rainbow Reactor itself. Rainbow Reactor has had no post-launch content updates since the Museum Tour in December 2019, and no new content has been announced for the base game. The developer's focus has fully shifted to other projects. All released DLC (the soundtrack) is shipped. The game launched as a complete, finite experience and has received no content additions in over six years. The October 30, 2023 post is the last known developer communication, and nothing in it indicates further updates to Rainbow Reactor are planned.
Evidence
Developer announces they are working on a new VR game and formally incorporated as a company. Acknowledges Rainbow Reactor will receive fewer updates as the team concentrates on new titles, though some QOL improvements were mentioned as possibilities.

About this game

ATTENTION: THIS GAME REQUIRES HIGH-SPEED CONTROLLER TRACKING

Unfortunately, Steam removed some VR compatibility indicators, so we have to put it plainly here: Rainbow Reactor uses extremely accurate physics that only work with high-speed controller tracking. This means that throwing accuracy can suffer greatly from using wireless solutions like Air Play, Virtual Desktop etc - depending on your setup. Also, the game does not support lower frequency positional tracking like what is used in WMR for example. In short, it is advised to play this game using external tracking like lighthouses. On a side note, this makes this game an ideal tool to find out how good the inside-out tracking of HMDs and also the speed and reliablity of your wireless transmission is.
