Evaluation

ReThink launched on March 8, 2017 as a first-person laser puzzle game by solo developer Yaeko. The developer actively supported the game post-launch, culminating in the major Update 16 rework on December 20-21, 2018, which overhauled the game significantly: removing all jumping puzzles, improving performance, adding new puzzles and features, and updating the UI. This rework was explicitly positioned as addressing the community's most-criticized aspects of the game, and the developer noted that the old version would remain available but receive no further support going forward. After Update 16, developer communications about this specific game shifted toward announcements of sequels in the ReThink series (ReThink | Evolved 2 in March 2018 was actually announced before the rework, and ReThink 4 was announced in October 2022). The October 2022 post and August 2023 pricing post are the most recent developer communications, but both are administrative or promotional in nature — the 2022 post promotes ReThink 4 as the newest entry in the series, and the 2023 post addresses a Steam pricing rule change affecting all of the developer's games. The developer has explicitly stated a philosophy of no DLC and no post-launch monetization schemes. The sequel announcements make clear that new content for the ReThink concept is being delivered through new standalone games rather than updates to the original. The Update 16 rework in December 2018 represents the final substantial content update to ReThink 1, with no further content announced or implied for this title since then.
