Evaluation

River Towns launched on March 24, 2025 as a fully released puzzle game, having been funded through a Kickstarter campaign that closed on January 10, 2025 at over 200% of its goal. That campaign unlocked several stretch goals — additional challenge levels, a level editor, a Photo Mode extension with color customization, and backer-exclusive rewards including in-game statues and custom content. The launch post on March 24, 2025 confirmed the Level Editor and Photo Mode extension shipped with the game. The developer also committed to weekly rotating challenge levels as an ongoing feature. The last known developer communication was on September 29, 2025 (carried forward from the previous evaluation), in which the studio stated they were "working hard behind the scenes to finish your remaining rewards. Including the in-game statues and custom content." This confirmed that Kickstarter backer obligations were still outstanding at that time. As of today, October 1, 2026, there has been no developer communication since September 29, 2025 — over 12 months of silence. The outstanding backer rewards have not been confirmed as delivered, and the developer has not posted any update indicating the game's content obligations are complete. Given the length of the silence and the unresolved commitments, it is unclear whether delivery is still in progress or has quietly stalled.

About this game

In River Towns, you place differently shaped buildings and make them fit into a limited area. Combine unique districts into a vibrant living city and help restore our River Towns.

Puzzle a River Town

Each of the three districts has its own set of shapes which are shuffled randomly. This makes every game you play a new and unique puzzle to solve. The different district's unique and vibrant architecture combines into beautiful little towns along the river. As the town grows, more townspeople move in and bring life back into this old and broken world.

Earn Points

Buildings also belong to differently colored districts which score bonus points when connected into large clusters. Getting a good score on each level awards stars, which restores the world and also unlocks more levels.

Each Level is Different

The beginning of each town starts with you restoring this part of the dried up river and surrounding it with buildings. Throughout the game you encounter other objectives, such as gold to collect, trees to regrow and old monuments to rebuild. This turns the difficulty and possibility of collecting points completely upside down.

Progression

With every city you piece together, the world becomes a little more verdant. When you complete a level, you will receive a gold, silver or bronze marker, depending on your score. Once you have enough points, you can move on to the next world.

Level Editor with Steam Workshop integration

Create and customize your own levels with the Level Editor! Design and build your own unique levels, experiment with different district layouts, and challenge yourself or others to solve your creations. Upload your own creations to the Steam Workshop and play your friends' levels
