Evaluation

Shashingo launched on February 27, 2024. The launch post explicitly promised post-launch work including photo exports, additional language support, and new lessons. The developer followed through on all of those commitments through a series of free updates: Pop-up Translations (March 1, 2024), Quiz Mode and photo exports (May 21, 2024), Flash-Card Viewer improvements (August 4, 2024), Motion-Sickness Reduction and movement improvements (September 3, 2024), and a Languages Update on May 25, 2025 that added community-localized French, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese, plus Steam Trading Cards. That May 2025 update completed the final items from the original launch-day promise list. As of today, October 8, 2026, the last developer communication was on May 25, 2025 — over 16 months ago. Prior to that, the longest gap between any two updates was roughly 8 months (September 2024 to May 2025). No future content has been announced, no unreleased DLC exists, and there has been no developer communication since May 25, 2025. The developer made no statement about additional content beyond the original launch promises, all of which were delivered. The silence since May 2025 — more than double the longest prior gap — combined with the absence of any new announcements, indicates that development has concluded with all originally promised content delivered.

Create Stunning Photography Based Flash-Cards

Every photo flash-card you take will be unique to you. The idea behind this is to strengthen the relationship between a word and how you see its physical appearance. In the real world, you can then see such objects and make connections to the Japanese words you've already learned while playing Shashingo.

Track Your Progress in the Photo Album

Your photo album is where you keep your collection of photo flash-cards. If you remember them well in Find Mode, they'll be separated into the 'mastered' tab and shown with a gold star sticker. However, if you're struggling to remember a word in Find Mode, they'll be marked with a purple exclamation mark sticker, so you know which words you need to practice more.

Learn from Lessons In-Game

At the back of your photo album, there are also numerous pages of Japanese lessons designed for beginners that will teach you how to speak Japanese and use the vocabulary that you learn in Shashingo. Also included are some key words and important phrases that can help you in your future conversations.
