Evaluation

Space Impossible has been in Early Access since March 2016 and is actively working toward its full 1.0 release. The developer, Happy Polygon, has maintained a consistent and frequent update cadence throughout development — shipping multiple Beta releases and, more recently, a series of numbered Pre-Releases (PR1 through PR6) at roughly 1–3 month intervals as part of a structured ramp-up to the 1.0 launch. The most recent developer communication was on June 26, 2026 — just one day before this assessment — confirming that RC1 (Release Candidate 1) is underway. The post describes specific features still being finalized: a redesigned graviton beam, new distress calls, AI pathfinding improvements, and performance optimizations. The developer notes RC1 is "still far enough out" to warrant a status update post, suggesting the final release is not imminent but is clearly approaching. Prior to RC1, the game went through six numbered Pre-Releases between June 2025 and April 2026, each adding substantial content: new factions (The Seti Rimanoo, The Brotherhood of Seekers), new star system types (Black Holes), new gameplay systems (split screen inspection, new input schemes), economy overhauls, and more. A May 2025 announcement post outlined the full scope of what was planned for 1.0, and the subsequent Pre-Releases have systematically delivered on those commitments. A December 2025 developer post confirmed the game remains on target for v1.0, with plans to release a demo and additional surprises at launch. The store description also references "several Betas still to come" (though this language predates the current Pre-Release phase). The game is in a healthy, active final stretch toward its 1.0 release, with regular developer communication and a clear roadmap being executed on.

About this game

Take the helm of a starship as you explore, blast or trade your way through the cosmos in a procedurally generated sandbox universe where every tile matters. Use your ship to explore unknown star systems, become a pirate preying on trade routes or do work for the military as your fate is in your own hands.

Key Features:
  • Every object is made up of tiles, which can be destroyed, created or changed allowing for very tactical combat
  • Procedurally generated universe — Enter a different seed and each universe is different
  • Multiple factions — Each with a dozen or more starships
  • Near-real Newtonian physics allowing for a better space-like experience — Use a tractored ship as a shield against attacks or use it to smash into the enemy
  • Ship customization — Build your ship the way you want to. Need another engine? Go ahead. Want a new paint job? Sure thing, what color should it be?
  • Trade system — Have a bunch of stuff you don't want? Travel to a nearby tradepost and sell it, or buy that crucial upgrade you need
  • Manufacturing system — Gather key materials and use it, along with specialty labs, to create new ships and components, or upgrade existing ones
  • Single Player and Multiplayer — Play singleplayer or multiplayer on LAN or Internet
  • Cross Platform — Windows, Mac (now available) and Linux (now available)
  • Ongoing Free Updates — Continue to receive updates as features and content are added. Eighteen Alphas down, with several Betas still to come.
