Evaluation
TaskPals launched on May 25, 2023 as a free companion app and has been actively maintained by its solo developer ever since. The app transitioned to a paid model ($4) in November 2024, folding all previously separate DLC content into the base purchase.
The most significant milestone was the version 2.0 major update released on January 27, 2025, which introduced Steam Workshop support (allowing users to create and share their own Pals), multi-monitor support, a reworked drag-and-throw interaction system, and a redesigned interface. This was the culmination of a ground-up rework the developer had been working on for months.
After the 2.0 launch, the developer shipped version 2.1 on March 19, 2025 with new features (a "Force Border" option and per-display settings for multi-monitor setups) and explicitly listed several areas still being worked on: localization/translations, a new user tutorial, performance optimizations, different rendering options depending on a Pal's drawing style, and Pal competitions. A bug-fix hotfix (version 2.2) followed on May 12, 2025.
The developer has established a consistent pattern of updates across more than two years. The most recent developer communication was on May 12, 2025, and the March 2025 post explicitly named multiple features still in development. The historical gap between major updates is roughly 6–12 months, meaning October 2026 falls just at the outer edge of — or slightly beyond — the window since the last major release (January 2025). However, given the explicit in-progress roadmap stated as recently as March 2025 and the ongoing minor update activity through May 2025, the developer has not signaled that the app is finished. No statement of completion has been made.

About this game

TaskPals is a simple companion app that brings life to your taskbar with cute and tiny pixel pets. Currently there are 8 pets available, and many more to come! You can manage which pets you want to take out and customize your interactions with them! Pets go around wondering around your taskbar! You can customize area where pets are starting. You can set pets to be either "friendly" or "annoyed". When they are friendly, you will be able to pet them when clicking on them, else if they are "annoyed" they will run away from your cursor so you can chase them around! The main function of "annoyed" mode is that pets don't disturb you while you are working and using the taskbar.
