The Backrooms

The Backrooms has been in Early Access since October 28, 2022, developed by a solo developer at Ionized Games. The game has been steadily updated since launch, with feature patches and content drops throughout 2022, 2023, 2024, and into 2025–2026. On April 7, 2026, the developer posted that Update 7.5 would be the last update before a major overhaul, describing roughly a year of behind-the-scenes work that was almost ready to share. Most recently, on August 14, 2026 — just 13 days before today — the developer announced V2.0 Beta access. This is described as a complete rebuild of the game from the ground up, featuring video projections for storytelling, destructible environments (over 50% of areas), a new journal/interaction system, and near-weekly updates on the beta branch. The developer explains this overhaul took about two years and was necessary to tell the story they wanted to tell. The beta is now available for testing, and the developer's stated focus going forward is on story content and environments. The full V2.0 release has not yet shipped — this is still in beta testing. The game remains in Early Access with active and very recent development underway. No 1.0 release date has been announced.
