Evaluation

The Horror at Highrook is a solo-developed occult card crafting RPG that launched on May 1, 2025 after a multi-year development period. The developer, Tom at Nullpointer Games, secured funding from OuterSloth (the indie fund created by the Among Us developers) in November 2024, which helped bring the game to completion. The game shipped as a complete narrative experience spanning eight chapters of cosmic horror, with a defined story about investigating the disappearance of the Ackeron family. Following launch, the developer issued a series of bug fix patches (versions 1.02 through 1.06) between May 1–8, 2025, addressing stability issues, typos, and minor progression adjustments. In the May 8 patch notes, the developer explicitly noted that "as long as nothing terrible crops up the pace of patches might slow down a bit from now on" — a clear signal that the post-launch stabilization phase was wrapping up. There are no DLC listings, no announced expansions, no roadmap for future content, and no developer statements indicating additional content is planned. The game has no post-launch major content releases and no history suggesting a sustained update cycle beyond the initial bug-fix wave. The store description presents a complete, self-contained narrative. The game launched as a finished product and has received only maintenance patches since release.
Evidence
Patch 1.06 notes state the developer hopes most initial bugs are fixed and that the pace of patches will slow down, signalling the end of the post-launch fix cycle.

Is it for me?

The Horror at Highrook is an unusual game with some unique mechanics. There is a wealth of story, character and challenge hidden in the halls. There is a lot of text in the game and no voice acting (I couldn't afford it!) and that might put some people off, I understand. However, If you enjoy evocative writing, unpacking mysteries, and are wiling to experiment with a different type of game, then I think you will enjoy the journey! Check out the fully narrated gameplay trailer above to see how the game systems look in action.
