The Witness

The Witness launched on January 26, 2016 as a self-contained single-player puzzle game with no announced post-launch DLC or content roadmap. The store description describes a complete experience: "over 500 puzzles" with "no filler," framing the game as a finished, curated product rather than one expecting ongoing content additions. After launch, the developer shipped a feature patch on December 21, 2017 adding quality-of-life improvements (remappable controls, a new click-to-move scheme, cross-platform save compatibility), which represents the last meaningful content addition to the game. No further content updates have followed. On July 6, 2024, Thekla, Inc. noted they were working on a new, unnamed puzzle game — describing it as entering "the downhill slope of design." This was a reference to their next project, not new content for The Witness. On June 17, 2026, Thekla, Inc. confirmed that their successor game — now named *Order of the Sinking Star* — is nearly complete and had a playable demo available during Steam NextFest. This post retrospectively confirms that the developer's energy since The Witness has been directed entirely toward this new title, with no indication that The Witness itself will receive any further updates. The Witness shipped as a complete, standalone experience and has received no content additions beyond quality-of-life patches. The developer has moved on to their next project.
