Evaluation

A House of Many Doors launched on February 3, 2017 as a complete, self-contained RPG. After the initial launch, the developer (Harry Tuffs) issued only minor bug-fix and UI patches through early 2017, then went quiet for approximately six years. In November 2023, the developer returned with a significant v2.0 update — described explicitly as the first update in roughly six years — incorporating a large fan-made bugfix patch by community member Altotas. The developer framed this as finally delivering "an official polished version" of the game, not as the beginning of a new content cycle. A series of follow-up maintenance patches (v2.1 in January 2024, v2.2 in February 2024, and v2.3 in July 2024) rounded out this cleanup effort. None of these updates introduced new story content — they were all bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. The most recent developer communication is a July 10, 2025 post announcing the launch of an entirely separate game, *Occlude*, published under the studio name Tributary Games. In that post, the developer references A House of Many Doors in the past tense and points players toward the new game, with no mention of any planned future updates or content for A House of Many Doors. There is only one DLC listed — the soundtrack, which shipped on launch day. No unreleased DLC exists, no roadmap has been published, and no future content has been announced. The developer's own words characterize the v2.0 patch as the completion of long-overdue polish work, not the start of ongoing development. With the developer having moved on to a new studio and a new game, A House of Many Doors is a complete product. The last meaningful content-related update was the bug-fix patch on July 22, 2024.
Evidence
Developer announces launch of a completely separate new game (Occlude) under a new studio name (Tributary Games), referencing A House of Many Doors only as past work. No mention of any future updates for AHOMD.

Developer explicitly describes the v2.0 update as finally delivering 'an official polished version' of the game, framing it as the completion of long-overdue maintenance rather than the start of new content development. New story content was intentionally kept out of the official patch.

About this game

Welcome to the House. You are not welcome.

Explore the House, a parasite dimension that steals from other worlds, in a train that scuttles on mechanical legs.

Uncover secrets. Open locked doors. Lead a crew of dysfunctional characters. Write procedurally-generated poems. Fight in turn-based combat. Explore a strange new setting, dripping with atmosphere, crusted with lore. Escape. Escape. Escape.

You are an explorer, poet and spy, launching yourself into the unknown in search of adventure. Rig an election in the city of the dead. Visit a village lit by the burning corpse of a god (careful not to inhale the holy smoke). Sell your teeth to skittering spider-things for a moment in their library. Over 90 bizarre locations await discovery in the dust and the dark.

A House of Many Doors is a 2D exploration RPG that takes inspiration from Sunless Sea, China Mieville, Planescape: Torment and Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities. It features over 300,000 words of branching original story and over 770 trillion bad poems.

WARNING.

Please be aware that this game contains the following romance options:

A House of Many Doors has benefited from the kind support and partial funding of Failbetter Games, makers of Sunless Sea and Fallen London.
