Evaluation
Alan Wake originally launched on Steam on February 16, 2012, including two special episodes ("The Signal" and "The Writer") as part of the base game. Two DLC items were released: Developer Commentary (March 2, 2012) and Bonus Materials (December 17, 2013). A companion standalone title, Alan Wake's American Nightmare, was released separately on May 22, 2012.
In May 2017, Remedy announced the game was being taken off sale due to expiring music license agreements, offering a final 90% discount. However, the game was subsequently returned to sale — it remains purchasable today — after Remedy resolved the licensing issues. A September 10, 2024 patch removed David Bowie's "Space Oddity" from the game, replacing it with an original song by composer Petri Alanko, indicating Remedy addressed the remaining licensing concerns to keep the game available.
Both DLC items are released, no further content has been announced, and Remedy's own communications confirm the game's development concluded years ago. The game launched as a complete story-driven experience, and all planned post-launch content has shipped. The most recent developer action (the September 2024 music replacement patch) was a licensing maintenance update, not a content addition. This is a finished game.

About this game
When the wife of the best-selling writer Alan Wake disappears on their vacation, his search turns up pages from a thriller he doesn’t even remember writing. A Dark Presence stalks the small town of Bright Falls, pushing Wake to the brink of sanity in his fight to unravel the mystery and save his love.
Presented in the style of a TV series, Alan Wake features the trademark Remedy storytelling and pulse-pounding action sequences. As players dive deeper and deeper into the mystery, they’ll face overwhelming odds, plot twists, and cliffhangers. It’s only by mastering the Fight With Light combat mechanic that they can stay one step ahead of the darkness that spreads across Bright Falls.
With the body of an action game and the mind of a psychological thriller, Alan Wake’s intense atmosphere, deep and multilayered story, and exceptionally tense combat sequences provide players with an entertaining and original gaming experience.
