Ancient Abyss

Ancient Abyss entered Steam Early Access on January 14, 2021 as a Zelda-inspired roguelike dungeon explorer. Throughout 2021 and into early 2022, Screambox Studio maintained an extremely active update cadence — publishing dozens of patches, feature updates, and content drops, sometimes multiple times per month. This included major new levels (Tinder Valley in June 2021), large weapon and skill system expansions, and a new Infinite Mode game mode that was added to a beta branch in January 2022. The studio's last recorded developer communication was a feature patch posted on February 25, 2022. Since February 25, 2022, the developer has posted no updates, announcements, or communications of any kind. This silence sharply contrasts with the previously prolific update schedule and has persisted for over four years. The game remains in Early Access — no 1.0 launch has been announced or completed, and no statement has been made about the conclusion of development. The Infinite Mode introduced in early 2022 was still in a beta branch as of the last known post, suggesting it had not been formally completed or promoted to the main game. Given the complete lack of developer communication since February 25, 2022, and the absence of any 1.0 milestone or completion statement, it is unclear whether development is continuing, has been quietly abandoned, or is on an indefinite hiatus. Players should be aware that the game's future as an Early Access title is uncertain.
