Evaluation

Ancient Cities launched into full 1.0 release on March 24, 2023, after a lengthy Early Access period. At launch, the developer explicitly stated their intention to keep developing the game as "a platform for future expansions to be announced in the near future," and they have consistently delivered on that promise. Since the 1.0 release, the developer has shipped a regular cadence of both major content updates and feature patches. The identified major content updates are: Big Pelt Hut (June 26, 2025), Animal Raids (June 26, 2025), and European Rivers (July 24, 2026). In addition, there have been 15 feature patches adding new trees, plants, resources, gameplay systems, balance improvements, and UI overhauls, along with 25 bug fix patches — indicating continuous, hands-on development engagement throughout this period. The most recent post (July 24, 2026 — just 23 days before today's assessment date) is particularly telling. The European Rivers update post states: "After European Rivers, our next major focus is a complete gameplay update shaped by community feedback. More news soon!" This is a direct, explicit statement from the developer confirming that additional major content is already in planning. Separately, multiple feature patches from June 2026, December 2025, and September 2025 each include a "What's Next?" section stating "We are working on new free content updates while improving the game." No announcement of a final update, content completion, or development wind-down has been made at any point. The developer is actively engaged, recently shipped major content, and has explicitly flagged their next area of focus.

About this game

Ancient Cities is a realistic, survival city builder in an immersive procedural environment. Lead the fate of your tribe through ancient times!

You will have to guide your people through generations, discovering and improving technologies, managing resources and population, building your city organically and  facing other tribes in a fully simulated world and ecosystem.

Take your time to build your ancient city, step into our ancestors footsteps and get immersed in the ancient times.

In Ancient Cities you can play at any time and place of the European Stone Age. From the warm Mediterranean to cold Scandinavia and from the end of the Ice Age to the end of the Neolithic.

In each time and place you will have historically accurate forests, animals, buildings, tools, resources and knowledge of each culture that you will have to manage to survive in the harsh ancient times.

Ancient Cities reduces micromanagement through intelligent automation. Organise and build while your citizens perform the tasks that best suit their specific skills and knowledge.

In the regional game layer, you will be able to trade or attack neighbouring tribes or perhaps decide to migrate elsewhere if resources become scarce.

This is only the beginning, Ancient Cities has been designed as an ever-improving platform that supports the continuous introduction of new compatible content to explore new cultures and places throughout history.

Stay tuned for new improvements and contents!
