Gensokyo Orb launched on August 28, 2024 as a free-to-play online strategy game with in-app purchases. The game received regular updates through late 2024, including a major Version 1.1.0 update on October 1, 2024 that added a new character, seasonal content, and a limited-time event mode. However, on July 12, 2025, the developer (Tri-eye) published a formal announcement explaining that they can no longer afford to maintain the game's primary server and cannot sustain ongoing operations. As of July 24, 2025, the game was migrated to a cheaper backup server, all paid monetization (top-ups and battle passes) was shut down, and the game became permanently fully free-to-play with all in-game content unlocked via a currency grant. The developer acknowledged this as a wind-down of active operations, cited the game's in-app purchase model as a mistake, and stated they intend to apply lessons learned to future projects. This announcement represents a clear end to the game's active commercial development. The service continues to run in a maintenance state on the backup server, but no further content development has been communicated, and the monetization infrastructure has been dismantled. The game is effectively complete as of the July 24, 2025 transition date.
