Evaluation
Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator has been in development since 2010 and released on Steam in September 2013. On December 30, 2021, the developer explicitly stated that version 2.8.0 would "most likely be the LAST version of Artemis 2.x," confirming that active development on this game was wrapping up. The reason given was that the developer had moved on to building Artemis Cosmos — a complete ground-up rewrite of the game on a new codebase — rather than continuing to update the aging original.
This was confirmed on July 25, 2023, when Artemis Cosmos launched on Steam Early Access. The developer's announcement described Artemis SBS as "very old" with code dating back to 2010, noting it had become increasingly difficult to develop and had fallen behind modern hardware. They committed to keeping Artemis SBS available for purchase but made clear it represents the end of a chapter rather than a continuing development effort.
No further updates, patches, or developer communications have been posted for Artemis SBS after the December 2021 release of version 2.8.0. The game shipped as a complete, feature-stable product and its successor is now available separately on Steam.
Evidence
Artemis Cosmos launches on Steam Early Access as the official successor, with the developer describing Artemis SBS as very old and difficult to develop further. Artemis SBS will remain available for sale but no new development is planned.
Developer explicitly states version 2.8.0 will 'most likely be the LAST version of Artemis 2.x,' citing a shift in focus to the ground-up rewrite Artemis Cosmos.

About this game
Artemis is designed for anyone who watched Star Trek and dreamed of what it would be like to sit on the bridge of a star ship.
Artemis simulates a spaceship bridge by networking several computers together. You cannot play Artemis single-player! One computer runs the simulation and the "main screen", while the others serve as workstations for the normal jobs a bridge officer might do, like Helm, Communication, Engineering, and Weapon Control.
Artemis is a social game where several players are together in one room ("bridge") , and while they all work together, one player plays the Captain, a person who sits in the middle, doesn't have a workstation, and tells everyone what to do.
