Evaluation

Asleep: Act 1 is a 2D psychological horror adventure released on May 9, 2024 as the first episode of an episodic series following Ana Lúcia's story. The developer, Black Hole Games, announced Act 2 at Gamescom Latam on July 1, 2024, and released it on May 8, 2025 as a DLC linked to the Act 1 store page. The game is explicitly structured as an episodic series — the title itself is "Act 1" — signaling that the full story spans multiple installments beyond what has shipped so far. Since Act 2's launch, the developer has been actively patching both acts, with bug fix updates on May 9, May 20, and June 20, 2025, and a substantial feature patch on October 28, 2025. The most recent developer communication was on June 20, 2025 — just two days before today's assessment date. The developer has not announced a conclusion to the series or indicated that no further acts are planned. The episodic nature of the game, combined with the ongoing active support and the fact that Act 2 only released about 13 months ago, means additional episodes remain a reasonable expectation.

About this game

Asleep is a psychological horror adventure set in the Brazilian Northeast of the 90s, and with a unique artistic look, ranging from detailed pixel art to fluid animations. "Act 1" is the first episode of Ana Lúcia's story, a lonely and confused girl, lost in her nightmares, and immersed in a disturbing reality.

With not much information, and a mind flirting with insanity, the player must join her to unravel what is happening in her universe, collecting clues in her sketchbook and solving puzzles. Armed only with a flashlight to illuminate the path, and wit to survive the enemies always lurking in the darkness.

Turn to your flashlight and the ambient lighting to survive, using light to find new items and places, and even to attract or avoid enemies. Different monsters react differently to light! With your flashlight in hand, use stealth mechanics to escape dangers while learning to deal with each threat.

Avoid staying in the dark for too long, as it will cause the protagonist's sanity to deteriorate, leaving her anxious and attracting more dangers. The longer in the darkness, the more chaotic Ana Lúcia's nightmares become.

Explore point-and-click mechanics to solve puzzles, flee from monsters like in classic survival horrors, and navigate the environment through Asleep's platforming elements. All while experiencing the game's dark atmosphere by exploring the highly detailed 2D environments developed in pixel art.

And more:

  • Travel between two versions of the game's universe, encountering an even darker and more hostile side of it

  • Collect documents, items, and clues to unravel the dark mysteries of the plot

  • Dense narrative with some choices and collectibles that can unlock secret memories

  • Story divided into chapters, with Act 1 being the first part of the game - Act 2 now available as DLC!
