Back of Space is an Early Access game actively developed since its August 2021 release, working toward a confirmed full launch. After a hiatus from December 2021 to June 2023 due to financial and operational difficulties, the developer returned with a detailed roadmap and has shipped a steady series of major updates: the Foundational Update (August 2023), the ESCAPISM region (September 2023), THE KARMAN VIRUS region (December 2023), a follow-up Karman Virus patch (September 2025), and THE SCREAMING MACHINE region (April 2026). The April 6, 2026 update post explicitly states: "See ya'll on the next update, which will be full launch." This is a direct developer commitment that a 1.0 release is the next planned milestone. Additionally, the June 2023 return post described an entirely hidden second portion of the game — roughly 50% more content — that the developer planned to reveal at launch, suggesting the full release will bring significant new content beyond what is currently playable. As of today (October 8, 2026), the last developer communication was April 6, 2026. The gap between major updates in the recent active period has ranged from roughly 1 to 7 months. A roughly 6-month gap since the last major update places this near the outer edge of the recent pattern, but the developer has maintained an irregular cadence throughout and has a clear stated endpoint. There is no signal of distress or abandonment — just silence consistent with ongoing development work ahead of a launch.
